Being a parent again at age 48 wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. While my baby, Olive, is my third child (I have two other daughters who were 18 and 14 when Olive was born), it was my wife, Katie’s, first. While I wanted to be all relaxed and “old hat” about the whole thing, it was completely new to Katie. The bottom line is it wasn’t as easy as I imagined it would be for any of us! Olive was very dependent on her Mama, and I was starting to get a little depressed about the complete loss of just about everything my wife and I did together before little Olive came along. Thankfully, four things happened that made all of our lives a heck of a lot better. One, Katie got more relaxed about being a parent and that helped me settle in. Second, Olive was weaned. Actually, Olive, one of the most avide breast-feeders I have ever seen, weaned herself! And third, we got onto a schedule. Bedtime, naptime, etc., all started at close to the same time every day. And finally, we developed a bedtime routine. Katie even took photos of each step in the nighttime routine and posted them on the back of little Olive’s door. There was suddenly a ray of light at the end of the tunnel! Now, at nearly two, Olive is doing great. She’s happier, we’re happier, and we are all enjoying watching our newest family member grow into a fantastic child! - Mark Zweig
